Gillette Home
Location: Kansas City, MO, USA
Area: 3700sq.ft.
Project Year: 2025
Project Description: Set in the suburbs of Kansas City, the Gillette Home reimagines the growing trend of Barndominiums by turning a pre-engineered shell into a fully realized family residence. Designed in 2025 for a household with multiple children, the 3,700-square-foot project explores how prefabricated building methods can be adapted into highly personalized, functional living environments. The design embraces the industrial DNA of the Barndominium typology—exposed steel trusses, soaring volumes, and clean modern lines—while layering in warmth through spatial organization and family-centric programming. At its core is a double-height atrium conceived as the “heart of the home.” Anchored by a monumental fireplace, this communal space replaces the typical TV focal point and encourages shared gatherings across generations. Programmatically, the home is divided into east and west wings on the second floor, giving structure to family life. One side houses children’s bedrooms and a generous craft studio, while the other integrates a flexible office and play zone. Below, the open kitchen and dining areas spill naturally into the atrium, reinforcing connectivity. Perhaps the most striking feature is a 40–50-foot indoor climbing wall that extends from basement to roofline—a vertical thread embodying the family’s passion for climbing and creating a dramatic sculptural presence. The architectural language balances openness and retreat: soaring atrium views are countered by intimate nooks, ensuring moments of privacy within a dynamic social framework. Exposed steel remains intentionally visible, celebrating the prefabricated shell rather than concealing it, and establishing a raw yet refined industrial-modern aesthetic. Through its inventive reprogramming of a cost-effective Barndominium shell, the Gillette Home demonstrates how prefabricated structures can transcend their utilitarian origins. The project not only provides a tailored living environment for a growing family but also expands the possibilities of residential design within this emerging American housing typology.
